Salt, sound and found objects

CASC, Castlefield Gallery New Art Spaces Chester

Wichcraft is a sound sculptural installation, which draws on the poetic interplay of sound and found objects to evoke the historical and ecological context of the Cheshire salt industry. Utilising broken Tata salt bricks that have been submerged and eroded by water, alongside foraged and found materials, the work creates a delicate balance representing the flora and fauna prevalent in the region. Butterflies make reference to the garden at the Lion Salt Works in Northwich, while trailing brown leads and speakers make the sound visible, integrating it as an essential element of the aesthetic. The sound component features a loop of Mahatma Gandhi - a significant figure in the History of British salt exportation - conversing with a journalist.
