The Engine

2014

Sound, lawnmower, collage

Contemporary Art Space Chester

The Engine, is a playful sound sculptural intervention, which changes form depending on it's site of installation. In the gallery setting, the piece mows through a trail of collage, whilst outdoors, it raws its way into the grass.

The sound aspect within the mower holds a sense of activation, with its loud motor-like sound. It is a recording of the artists' cat, purring, edited and amplified to sound like a revving engine.

The mowing engine has a significant proportion of silence. This not only allows for the visual aspect of the work to be more considered, but also enables the sounds of grasshoppers and frogs within the surrounding speakers inside mushrooms to become present. These delicate, small sounds gain the spotlight, allowing the viewer to pay attention to the minute, implicit details that we might otherwise disregard.
