Summertime

2011

Performance with clarinet and post it notes

Oriel Wrecsam Gallery and Telfords Warehouse Chester

Summertime is a performance piece by Woolley that explores fragmentation and breakdown through the sound of George Gershwin’s iconic melody, Summertime. Using excerpts from the written musical score, she cuts them into fragments, glues them onto post-it notes, and distributes them to fellow performers, who serve as human music stands. Each post-it note is placed on a performer’s forehead as Woolley moves in a circle, playing the fragmented melody on the clarinet.

As time passes, the notes gradually detach and fall to the floor, organically altering the melody. The performance concludes when the final post-it note drops, marking the piece’s natural end. This usually involves an intimidating stare between Woolley and the final performer, as Woolley repeatedly plays the final note, waiting for it to detach in it's own time.
