Rollo's Danube
2025
Performance and film
Picturehouse Chester
Castlefield Gallery New Art Spaces Chester
Premiering at the launch of the Chester Photo Festival, 2025, the filmed performance was born out of an ongoing interest in interspecies collaboration, and in the idea of giving animals a voice. At the heart of the piece is Rollo, a miniature dachshund, taking center stage as he ‘sings’ with heartfelt enthusiasm to his favourite piece of music -Strauss’ Blue Danube - the only melody that truly inspires him.
A sense of pride is collectively felt on Rollo’s behalf, for the delightful absurdity of this collaboration. Woolley’s artistic vision presents Rollo himself, accompanied by Rollo’s parents (wearing dog masks), and a group of string players, who lend the piece the sincerity and seriousness it playfully deserves.
