Flight
2014
Sound, speakers, logs, mushrooms, trailing leads and trailing plants
MA Show, Contemporary Art Space Chester
In Flight, two large speakers are placed upon two upright logs at angles. We hear the sound of swallows chirping, then a flapping of wings as they simultaneously take flight, followed by a silenced lull, which incites a sense of movement. A sense of connectivity materialises as brown wires direct our gaze towards the next discovery, entwining with delicate plant roots across the gallery floor.
Small sounds emerge from mushrooms: sponge-like, absorbent forms, physically holding the shape of the small audio speakers, which comfortably and intrinsically sit within. Delicate sound recordings of frogs, insects and grasshoppers which emerge from the mushrooms extend an embodied sensibility. They invoke the stillness of the natural environments from which they were recorded.
