The Barrier
2012
Experimental intervention with cones, taxidermied ducklings and live cows crossing the road
Site specific intervention - farm
This sculptural installation emerged from an ongoing exploration of interspecies collaboration.
Positioned as an open barrier where cows regularly cross the road, the installation invited curiosity while subtly disrupting routine. Knowing that cows are both creatures of habit and naturally inquisitive, their interactions with the work became the focus of the experiment. As the artist participated in the film—as the farmer guiding the herd—their responses were later observed through recorded footage.
Instead of the usual rope or gated barrier, a line of open cones featuring taxidermied ducklings marked the crossing. While one cow stepped through the cones, the others followed their familiar path, largely unchallenged by the interruption. Many, however, paused—sniffing and engaging with the sculptures before continuing their journey. The work thus captured a moment of subtle negotiation between instinct, habit, and curiosity.
